Cartes-de-visite of Confederate generals and other Civil War figures [manuscript], 1860-1865.

The collection contains cartes-de-visite of five Confederate generals: James Morrison Hawes, Theophilus Hunter Holmes, Fitzhugh Lee, John Hunt Morgan, and Isaac Munroe St. John and of Ohio politician Clement Laird Vallandigham. There is also a salt print of forty Union soldiers possibly taken in California.

Clement Laird Vallandigham was born July 29, 1820, in New Lisbon, Ohio (now Lisbon, Ohio), to Clement and Rebecca Laird Vallandigham. His father, a Presbyterian minister, educated his son at home. In 1841, Vallandigham had a dispute with the college president at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He was honorably dismissed, but he never received a degree. Edwin M. Stanton, the future Secretary of War under President Lincoln, was Vallandigham's close friend before the Civil War....

Theophilus Hunter Holmes was born November 13, 1804 to a prominent North Carolina family. In 1829 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Prior to the Civil War, Holmes served in various campaigns against Native Americans and also saw action in the Mexican War, where he was brevetted for gallantry at the battle of Monterrey. Fitzhugh Lee, grandson of Henry "Light-Horse Harry" and nephew of Robert E. Lee was Major General of the Confederate Army.
